Tips & Tricks: Hand Towels and the Changing Table

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

One of my favorite tips for the baby’s room involves purchasing a stack of inexpensive hand towels.  We did this kind of by accident, but they have proven to be one of our most often used and flexible items.  We primairaly use them on the changing table on top of the full changing pad cover as shown in the picture below.

I purchased several changing table pad covers before G arrived, but I had no idea how often they would get dirty during the day.  A squiriming baby (think feet kicking everywhere including into the diaper) can manage to get poo on a changing pad cover very quickly.  Add to that the fire hose peeing you get with a boy and the changing pad cover can get dirty just about every time you change their diaper.  Well, if you don’t want to do a load of laundry every couple of hours to wash your only two or three changing pad covers, enter the hand towels.  They cost just a few bucks, versus $10-$20 for a changing pad cover, so you can keep a stack of them by the changing table for the price of one cover.  They can be quickly removed when they get dirty and they are far easier to pull off and put back in place then the entire cover. This is very important when the baby has just dirtied the changing surface and you still need to get him cleaned up and put a clean diaper on him.  It would be impossible for me to hold the dirty baby while simultaneously pulling off the changing pad cover, replacing it and doing it all before he pees again.  With the towel, I just slip it out from under G and go about the business of changing him on the changing pad cover already underneath.  Then I replace the towel after the diaper is on and the table is ready for the next time you need it.

The towels are compact and a stack of 5-10 will give you some breathing room on laundry since you have more of them to use before you run out and need to wash them. We found ours at Target and you can get any color to coordinate with your nursery (they have tons of colors).  We also use them for especially big spit up incidents and for tummy time (cause spit up happens on the activity mat too), and I’m sure the list of uses will continue to grow as G gets more mobile.

G’s first dinner out to eat

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Last night was G’s first night going out to eat. Overall, he did great, but BM and I are the ones that have to get better at going out with him.

BM and I have long felt like G really needs to fit into our existing lives as much as possible. Certainly our lives have changed having a baby, but often we see people have children, their lives completely change and they loose who and what they were before the kids arrived.  In hopes that we can avoid that, we have to begining integrating G into one of our favorite pastimes - eating out. And why not, I usually buy the kids meal anyway because the portion sizes are so huge for the adults.

So, last night we took him to a cool little local restaurant up the street. We put G in his car seat and took him into the restaurant. I had a couple drinks - BM still isn’t drinking alcohol. G did great and was only fussy a couple times and, even then, it was only something I could hear since he was sitting right next to me.

I think the stimulation was a little much for him as there were lots of lights, music, people, noises, etc in this place. But, he will get used to that, I am sure. After we finished, to took him home, fed him, and he went to sleep for eight hours. All in all, it was a nice first restaurant trip with G and it was nice for BM and I to get out and have dinner together again.

Michigan J. Baby

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Gmoney is growing every day. We just plopped him on the scale and he came in at 13.2lbs. Each day he becomes more alert and wants to participate more with his surroundings.

Each day he has a couple really good very happy times where he smiles and loves to interact with either BM or myself. During these times, he is very awake and alert and he will try to mimic the noises we make. So, we will make an “oooohhhh” noise and he will work to make the same noise. Then an “aaaahhh” or whatever.

His attempts to mimic are clearly somewhat difficult for him and he has to really focus in order to make these unusual non-crying noises. At first, he will open his mouth really wide and then begin to contort his lips. Next you see him begin to try and position his tongue wherever he thinks it needs to be to mimic us. His face then turns really red and the muscles on his forehead tense up (it would be easy for an outsider to think he was making a good diaper for us). Finally, out pops a little squeak or ooohhh noise. It doesn’t last very long and he only copies us a handful of times before he just goes back to being happy and observant.

Several times we have tried to film him making these noises but once the camera turns on, somehow he just turns off the acting and just stares at the camera. He also does the same thing if the other person walks up. So, G started playing this little Simon game with BM and she would call me in to see him (they mostly make singing noises because BM sings to him all the time). I would walk in and he was happy and content, but there was no noise. I would walk away and he would kick it into gear again. So, for the time being, we have been referring to him as the Michigan J baby – so named after that hilarious cartoon character from days gone by: Michigan J Frog. Below is a short clip to remind you of the frog. Or, you can click here to watch the entire cartoon.
