Earth Day
Today is Earth Day and it is a beautiful day to celebrate our home. As many of you know, the Dr. Seuss book The Lorax is one of my all time favorite kids books. As G continues to grow, we hope to help him better appreciate the third rock from the sun that we live on. If you haven’t read the Lorax, I would highly recommend picking up a copy to share with the children in your family.
In celebration of Earth Day, I thought I would share a photo we took at the end of BM’s 40th week of pregnancy.
It has been a few days since I posted an update. BM is still recovering and she had a slight setback yesterday. She was having some abdominal pain and a slight fever so I took her to the doctor. Turns out a urinary track infection she had the week leading up to G’s birth is still around and may have moved up into her bladder. The doctor prescribed some antibiotics which she began yesterday. Hopefully, over the next five day, the infection will clear up.
In the meantime, BM and I have decided to forgo breast feeding to avoid having all those antibiotics flowing through him so early. After having a chemical free pregnancy, it was tough for BM to take the antibiotics for the last four days before G’s birth but it was a must as the infection could have caused early labor and, as you may recall, BM’s doctor was out of town and wouldn’t have been the doctor to birth Grayson had she gone into labor early. Anyway, we know have a choice about whether or not G has any antibiotics flowing through him and we have chosen to avoid them.
Grayson is moving along nicely. We had a schedule visit with the pediatrician this past Sunday. His weight was up to 8lbs 4oz (he was 8lbs 1oz when we left the hospital). She told us that our goal was to have him back up to his birth weight by two weeks from his birth. At least we are heading in the right direction. She also told us she felt like his Jaundice was looking better and didn’t expect to have to test him again. The whites of his eyes still have a slight yellow tint to them, but they are much better than what they were when we brought him home from the hospital.
The pediatrician also checked out his baby parts and said we have a healthy “bright eyed” baby boy. She also told us G’s circumcision looks good and so does his umbilical cord. I can’t remember if I mentioned or not, but in the hospital they did some kind of hearing test on G and everything was fine.

Gman is in his bouncy seat next to us in our home office. His little eyes are zooming around in what appears to be a REM sleep. His little mouth makes all kinds of expressions and his brow changes shape every so often.
In the reading that BM and I have and are doing about caring for a newborn there are discussions about babies dreaming. Which prompts the question I posed in the title of this post.
If I had to guess they dream of full breasts (milk that is - get your mind out of the gutter). I think G is dreaming about days at the beach and the fun adventures his parents will take him on. Oh, and I guess he is probably dreaming about discovering some new kind of dinosaur while still unable to walk. Which, of course, he will publish in a open scholarly journal and be famous worldwide allowing him to play the lead roll in the story of his life to be filmed when he is five. Who knows, what they dream about, but I know I have my dreams for him and hope we are successful as parents to help him achieve whatever dreams he can dream.

One thing that has surprised me about having G home is the number of times I wash my hands in a day. I guess it helps him some, but at least it makes me feel better about handling him or his bottles. While in the long run neither BM nor I have a problem with him having his share of colds and other stuff (we feel colds are cumulative in ones lifetime) we don’t really want him to be sick this early in his life.
So, we have gobs and gobs of that hand goop that you use to sanitize before surgery. Everyone that has been by gets a little goop in their hands before holding G.

Well, ever since we arrived home on Thursday afternoon, things have been very busy. BM’s mom has been over every day helping with things like all the laundry that stacks up quickly and just helping to watch Grayson so that BM can catch a quick nap and I can run errands around town. It has been very nice having her here and she has worked very hard to help keep the house running smoothly.
Speaking of gmom, she and BM are both taking naps right now. I am happy to watch Mr. G. while they catch up on some needed sleep. Here is a picture of us at the computer this morning. G asked if he could type a blog entry, but when I told him we didn’t have a wwwwaaaa key, he decided against it.
Yesterday, I took G up to a pathology place to have some blood drawn and tested for jaundice. His bilirubin (sounds like a good classic southern sandwich) numbers have been a little high since he was born so we have been working to bring it down. We have continued to supplement him with formula in order to ensure he continues to have ample stool which helps move some of that bilirubin out of his system. We also take him on the porch to try and pickup a few of those UV rays that are running around out there. His test yesterday still came up a little higher than the doctor would like (10.something as I recall). But, she tells us it isn’t abnormal or anything to worry about for him to have the numbers he has right now. Lucky for us, we have a good doctor that we can ask to ensure we cut through all the wives tales associated with good old bili.
We have a schedule checkup with the pediatrician tomorrow just to make sure things are on the right track.

Wow, what an unbelievably intense day today. Nothing in particular that was overwhelming, just a number of small things adding up to the intensity of the day.
We were able to leave the hospital about 2:30pm. I loaded up all the stuff from the room (camera gear, computers, baby stuff, baby, bm, etc). Once all the forms were signed and ID’s were checked I pulled the car around and the nurse helped BM down to the car and I snapped G into his plush accommodations and off we went.
We arrived home and I unloaded and setup BM for an afternoon feeding. BM’s mom helped out while I ran to the grocery store for a dinner sandwich and a prescription for BM.
We have done another feeding tonight and BM is asleep in the baby’s room waiting on the next feeding. G is in his bouncy seat on the floor next to me as I type this.
Oh ya, for those of you wondering, Dog seems to know that G is a small little human and Dog has been very respectful.
Anyway, I need to go start some laundry. Have a good night everyone.

While we are waiting for BM and Grayson to be discharged, I am doing some housekeeping which involves checking email and packing. We are finally able to sit down and go through the photos I have taken over the past couple of days.
This morning, I worked really hard to coordinate the pediatrician finishing rounds in time to get Grayson in the room while the OB was making his rounds so we could take a photo with the OB. Below is a photo with him and we cannot say enough nice things about him. He really was a dream to work with and can recommend him to anyone who needs an OB.
I also took the other photo a few minutes ago and thought you all would enjoy it too.

The doctor left about an hour ago and he has written discharge orders and the should get us out of here sometime mid afternoon. We are very excited about taking Mr. G. to the house to meet Cat and Dog and see his new room.

Today was Grayson’s third day kickin’ it with us. We are still at the hospital as BM is recovering from the birth. Both Grayson and BM are doing well and I think we will leave the hospital tomorrow.
Each morning BM’s doctor and Grayson’s pediatrician visit and spend about five to ten minutes answering our questions. They have both been great sports about our constant set of questions.
The nurses here at the hospital have been fantastic. On Monday Grayson was the only baby born in the hospital so we had constant attention from all the staff. Yesterday, there were eleven babies delivered in the hospital so the level of attention provided, dropped as you would expect. But the nurses have always made time to demonstrate techniques and answer our constant questions.
While staying in the hospital Grayson is assigned to the baby nurse and BM is assigned to the nurse that tends to the mothers. I would say that at least every couple of ours someone is coming in to check or tend to one or the other.
For the most part, Grayson has stayed with us in the room during the day and at night we let the nursery and baby nurse keep him. Every couple of hours they bring him down for a feeding and then they take him back and keep him until the next feeding.
The diaper changing and feedings have all been fine. Both BM and I have learned alot about tending to an infant and suspect we will keep learning over the coming weeks and months.
The food has been fine. Nothing stellar but nothing you wouldn’t eat. It is food you would have been fed in school. I suspect it is probably terribly difficult to cook for hundreds of people several times a day which must really limit the “chef’s” ability to produce fine cuisine.
One thing that has been interesting to me is to see the hospital come to life and go to sleep each day. There are many people moving in and around the hospital each day and each person has their own story. You can really tell how big this place is when you go to the lunchroom for a break as things are always moving there around the standard meal times.
The room we are in has seen many of our friends and family over the past couple of days. Things also smell great around here because we have many bouquets of flowers, balloons, and other gifts. Thanks to everyone for your well wishes and thoughts.
Like I said, tomorrow is checkout day we think. I have the car seat in the car and we are ready to go. Once we get home we will have to figure out a few things :)
Alright, time to get back to being daddy for a little while. Just thought you would like an update.
Below are a few pictures from today. Don’t forget you can click on an image to see a larger version of it.

Everything is going great today. Today has been a pretty tough day for Grayson. Last night, he was having a difficult time raising his blood sugar so we gave him some formula. The formula didn’t sit right on his little stomach this morning which gave him some bad gas. But, as of this afternoon, he seems to be relaxed and sleeping well.
Also this morning, we had Grayson circumcised which I can only hope will at least be blocked out of his memory for the rest of his life. Needless to say, the doctor tells us everything went well.
