Pregger Parade

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Last night was our second session of “Baby Class.” The classes meet once a week and I think we have two more to go before we finish up.

The classes have touched on some things that have been helpful and then other things that haven’t. But overall, it has been worth it to attend.

As we see it, the primary purpose of attending the class is to become familiar with how things will “go down” at the hospital once labor begins. The instructor spent a good bit of time last night talking about all that takes place once labor begins and what the mother and the father can expect as the process moves along. You know, basic things like “the family waits here” or “here is the cafeteria” and “we have coffee available for any expecting grandparents.” The instructor is very knowledgeable and matter of fact, which we both like.

As many of you know, my academic and professional background leads me to walk around with a pad of paper most places I go. So, as you might expect, I am taking notes and trying to make sure things are straight in my head on how the process works and who is in charge of what and what color scrubs certain kinds of people wear. Mostly, I guess, it gives my mind something to focus on as I consider the possible contingencies of BM birthing our baby. Other people, including my close friends just call me a nerd ;)

Last night’s session consisted primarily of a tour of the facilities (birthing rooms, recovery rooms, nursery, etc.). So, this entailed the instructor, four soon to be dads, and four obviously pregnant women walking all over the hospital (and yes, I did have my notepad :).  Anyway, at one point during one of our elevator rides the elevator stopped before our destination floor. The doors opened and a member of the cleaning crew with a large floor buffer was standing outside the doors. Once the doors opened it was obvious to the guy that he wouldn’t be able to fit and said he would wait for the next elevator. BM, who is always ready with her quick wit yelled back as the doors where closing, “The funning thing is that when we got on the elevator, we weren’t pregnant.” It made everyone laugh and keep the night light.

Needless to say, the pregger parade marched on and we are smarter for it ;)

Weekend Getaway

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

BM and I decided to try and get away for the weekend. One of our good friends has a place at the lake about an hour from our house. It was very nice to get away and spend time with friends. Our dog had a great time fetching her plastic toy from the extremely cold waters. And, aside from kicking it with my huge stack of magazines, I was able to take a few pics.

Nasty Winter Weather

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Yesterday was a pretty nasty winter day around here. We had lots of rain with a mixture of snow and sleet which certainly doesn’t allow for much to be done outside. So, yesterday, BM and I spent the day doing something we haven’t done for a while - spent the day watching TV.

For those that don’t know, we have an AppleTV which you can think of as a pimped out ipod for your TV. It is a small box that hooks up to your TV and takes your pictures, music, TV Shows, YouTube, and Videos from your computer and puts them on your TV. I think Apple just lowered the price of the entry level version to about $230 and you can now rent downloadable movies. But, I digress.

A friend of ours turned us on to a Showtime Series called Dexter. Basically, Dexter is a forensics blood splatter specialist with the Miami PD. But, he is also a serial killer of killers. Michael C. Hall (the gay brother from Six Feet Under) does a fantastic job playing a serial killer that you can’t help but appreciate.

Speaking of Six Feet Under, we loved that show as well. I must say, the creativity of shows coming out of HBO (Six Feet Under, John From Cinicinati, Deadwood, Rome, Entourage, Sopranos, Carnivale, etc) and Showtime (The L Word, Weeds, Dexter, etc) is amazing. It puts the network TV shows to shame and has certainly found a place on our DVR and Apple TV.

Long story short, we watched all 12 hours of Dexter Season 2 yesterday and loved it. If you are interested in watching an episode to see what you think, you can download any or all of the first season in iTunes.

Hopefully, the writers strike will end on a positive note and the shows we have grown to love will kick back into full gear.

Nothing much about baby here, except that the baby enjoyed a day of doing absolutely nothing except watching a show about some crazy serial killer - cause that’s the kind of parents we are :)

Doctor’s Visit

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Just a quick note to let you know we had another baby checkup last week. The doc tells us that things are looking good and that we are on schedule for a mid April delivery.

Last week, BM had some kind of blood sugar test that involved drinking some Hawaiian Punch type drink one hour before the doctor’s visit. Apparently, it is not uncommon for a pregnant woman to develop a temporary form of diabetes during the pregnancy. The purpose of the Hawaiian punch test was to determine if BM was developing that problem. Thankfully, her test was fine.

While the temporary diabetes appears to be somewhat easily addressed, it is the second set of tests that would have taken place had the first drink test be positive that scared BM the most. BM doesn’t like to have her blood drawn and I guess the second test would have been several hours of further testing to ensure a proper diabetes diagnosis.

For those keeping score, BM is beginning to have some difficulty sleeping (which I guess will continue on for at least another eighteen years :) It is also becoming “harder and harder to breath” (not the song). So, we have to take our walks a little slower and climb the stairs a little slower and I am sure it will only get progressively more difficult. Otherwise, all is well in the BM and BD world.

Garage Sale Time

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Well, in our case, we should call it a pod sale - and I don’t mean ipod :)

Several weeks ago in our quest to organize and prepare the house for a new little baby (and our lack of free time that will surely follow), we decided to have a garage sale. In order to facilitate the organization and preparation of said sale, we ordered a mobile storage box called a POD (portable on demand storage).

The POD arrived about two weeks ago and we have been loading it for some time. BM has spent many evenings pricing and organizing so much crap I think we could open our own Wal-Mart store. But, the time is upon us and our sale is tomorrow.

So, if anyone out their in OSB land would like to get great deals on more stuff than you can shake a stick at, stop by tomorrow anytime from 6a- sometime mid afternoon. Otherwise, have a great weekend.
