It’s been a while!

March 16th, 2009 by Grayson's Daddy

Well, it has been a very long time since we posted anything.  The last two months have been very busy for us from a professional and academic standpoint. I have spent the past year heavily focused on finishing my dissertation.  The past couple of months have been spent dealing with the whirlwind of things that arise as the dissertation process comes to an end.  But, I am happy to report that I expect to graduate with my Phd during the Spring 2009 commencement.

As it relates to Gman things have progressed at a similarly rapid pace.  This past weekend, he took his first steps.  He and I like to spend several five minute sessions each day working on his walking skills.  That entails me propping him against the couch and then sitting on the floor about three feet in front of him offering encouragement and excitement to try and walk toward me.  The reason we do it that way is that I am close enough to catch him when he decides to just dive toward me.  The best way to describe what he has been doing is just putting his arms above his head like he is going to dive in a pool and then falling toward me like a board falling over.  I usually end up catching him just at the furthermost point of my reach.  Do that enough times with a 22+lb baby and you won’t want to do more than about 5 minutes at any one time.

Needless to say, over time, he has continued to work hard to move from point A to me at point B.  Over the weekend, he took three steps in his progression from the couch to me and was so proud of himself.  I can only imagine the mental fortitude it must take for children to keep “getting back on the horse” so to speak.

G can now easily climb up the stairs in the house.  We are trying to teach him how to safely navigate the stairs in the event he was on them without supervision - not that we have any intention of letting him on the stairs without supervision.  So, he will motor up the steps without much of a thought.  He has plenty of work to do before he is able to go down the stairs without tumbling down at terminal velocity.

He is now eating more solid foods.  He loves Honey & Nut Cheereos (does anyone know where the nuts are in that stuff?).  He loves hummus and fresh green beans but has no love at all for avocado.  He tolerates bananas and fish.  I try to juice him a fresh apple every couple of days so he can continue to improve his Sippy Cup techniques.  He is also starting to learn how to feed himself with a spoon and I must say I am very impressed with his perseverance and technique.  At the rate he is going, he will handle utensils better than me in no time.  All in all, he is eating great and growing because of it.  Last time he went to the doctor he weighed in about 22lbs I think.

Gman has a new tooth that came through a couple weeks ago.  The top left tooth that is next to the middle teeth popped through and he seems to be doing great.  It likely won’t be long before the top right tooth comes through.  At night we brush his teeth with a special baby toothbrush and he just smiles and enjoys himself as we try to protect his teeth from the ills of life.

He is talking more now.  He loves to yell for the dog to come around the corner and pay G some attention.  G also is mumbling more and has probably already met the criteria for saying dada or mama.  But, because we don’t think he yet understands the background for those terms we think his first understandable words are yet to come.

His sleeping routine is still great.  He generally sleeps 11 hours at night and 3-4 hours during the day.  During the day, he takes two naps beginning at about 9a and then in the afternoon around 2p.

A couple times a week, we give him a “big boy bath” in the bathtub.  Well, it is more like a big boy shower with the shower spray nozzle.  But, he loves his time in the shower with his shower toys and with his mom and dad cleaning all the nooks and crannies.

Speaking of, G is a very curious little boy.  He wants to put his hands on everything and will spend minutes (I guess a lot of time for a baby) looking at something as his brain tries to process how something is used or what it does or how he can use it to his advantage.  So, when we take him to Costco or out to dinner, he just loves watching the people and stuff flow by him.  He seems to be soaking it all in and enjoying nearly every minute of it.

Below are a ton of pictures taken since January.  Hope you enjoy them.

Spending time with L

January 13th, 2009 by Grayson's Daddy

This past weekend, we were finally over the colds such that we could run over to L’s house to let G and L exchange Christmas gifts.  This was the first time Gman was able to interact with L for such a long period of time and they both were great together.  She was such a wonderful playmate for G because she kept getting all kinds of toys out and then sharing them with G.  It was very sweet.  I hope BM and I can learn the techniques for installing such a sharing quality.

Below are a few shots from that play session.

Weekend Photos

January 11th, 2009 by Grayson's Daddy

Grayson is doing well. All four of his front middle teeth have broken through and he has been learning about them by grinding them together when he is around mom and dad.  They make such a wonderful little grinding, clicking, crackling sound that I just wish we could share it with everyone in internetville.

He loves the Johnny Jumper deal that hangs onto the door molding. Even when he isn’t in the jumper his legs act like he is. So, when we are changing a diaper our he is laying on his back, he jumps his little feet and wonders why the world isn’t moving like it does when he is in the jumper.

In tribute to his love for the jumper, I pulled out the camera and took a few pics yesterday.

1st Update of 2009

January 2nd, 2009 by Grayson's Daddy

Well, it has been a while since I updated you on G so I thought I would take what is a slow day at the office and write a post. G’s first Christmas and New Year were good. We traveled out of town for a few days and in spite of having a new big boy car seat, sleeping in the pack and play, traveling, having new teeth coming in, and having a cold, Grayson managed exceptionally well. His parents on the other hand didn’t do as well. The three of us had a cold that was very draining. Luckily, our progress was off slightly so when a bad day hit me, BM was able to take care of G and so on. Overall, he had a great time visiting with family and friends over the holiday.  We are all still fighting this cold, but we are feeling much better.

As I mentioned above, Grayson has a few more teeth coming in. His two top middle teeth are coming in together, although one is a few days behind the other. His bottom teeth are also growing pretty fast and we have started taking time to rub them down with a cloth every night as a means of brushing them.

He is still eating very well and growing fast. We haven’t officially measured him lately, but the breakfast table stands 28 inches off the ground and he easily hits his head on it if he isn’t paying attention. I would guess his height is probably about 28.5-29 inches tall. I would guess his weight to be about 25lbs.

G is really starting to get around. He is a very fast crawler but he definitely wants to be upright and moving. He pulls up on nearly everything and does a great job keeping his balance so long as he is holding on to something. Because of this, he has learned how to handle a fall much better than before. His is now 8.5 months old and I am going to guess that he will be walking a little by 10-11 months.

Below are a few pictures I took of G the yesterday. Happy New Year!

We have teeth!

December 16th, 2008 by Grayson's Daddy

Just a quick update to let you know that on Sunday we noticed Grayson’s bottom two middle teeth about to break through his lower gums.  As of last night, his left tooth had broken through and the right isn’t too far behind.  So far, his demeanor has been great in terms of dealing with what I would think is a painful process.  He is still the happy little baby that we all know so well.

As an aside I wore braces for two+ years as an adult and dealt with all that pain.  So seeing G’s teeth cutting through his gums brings those memories flooding back.  You know, it is like seeing someone with an eyelash or hair on their eyeball - just makes my eyes water thinking about it.

Quick Grayson Update

December 5th, 2008 by Grayson's Daddy

Good morning everyone.  I know it has been a while since we posted anything… life is just busy right now and as much I want OSK to pay the bills, it doesn’t.  Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.  Ours was very pleasant and G’s first Thanksgiving was a great day for him to socialize with his family.  He was a pleasure to have with us while we celebrated and gave thanks to the things we have.

This morning we will take G to have his second of two flu shots.  He had his first flu shot about two weeks ago I think.  He handled it well, so he will have the second shot this morning.  But, that means I am at the house waiting to take him to the doc’s office so I thought I would try to give you an update on where he is with his development.

He is a great crawler.  He loves to motor around and explore everything he can get his hands on and some things he can’t get his hands on. He is great a pulling himself up now and can stand while holding on to something with only one hand.  I don’t think it will be too long before he is able to stand without holding on to anything.

As he learns to explore he inevitably tumps over and hits his head on things.  We would love to keep him in a protective bubble, but we feel that doesn’t do him or us much long term good.  So, we have to live with short bursts of intense crying after he falls and bumps his head on the sofa or something like that.  In fact, he has learned to anticipate the pain that comes from falling such that when he falls but doesn’t hit his head, the fear of the pain that he thought he was going to have causes him to cry.  But, that give us clues as to where his brain development is in the long path of growth.

After the time change we had a very hard time getting G back on his all night sleep schedule.  We started putting him to bed an hour later (the clocks jumped and hour back when meant his time relative to the position of the sun was an hour later even through the clock read the same time) and he started waking up about five minutes earlier each day.  After a couple weeks, that five minutes a day adds up to not very much sleep for the parents.  We got online and read about others that have similar problems and the consensus seemed to be to put the child to sleep earlier.  So, we do that now and he sleeps nearly the same length of time only he is up earlier in the morning than he was otherwise by the clock, but it is the same time of day given that we just turned the clock backwards several weeks ago.

Gman does a fantastic job of turning the pages on his books.  Each night, as part of his bedtime routine, BM reads a short book to G to help him relax and go to sleep.  BM allows G to turn the pages and he is able to turn the pages in the correct direction and is so happy with himself after he does it.  In fact, he really doesn’t care about what is on the page, rather he cares only to make the pages turn so he can get to the end of the book.

Below are a few pics from the last couple of weeks.  Hope you enjoy.

Wake Up!

November 13th, 2008 by Grayson's Daddy

Since the time change a week or so ago, Gman has continued to wake up around his “normal time.”  In the past, he has slept about 11 hours a night which puts him waking up about 6am.  This means he likes to wake up now at 5am since the time dropped back an hour. For what it is worth, the current time as I write this is 5:37am and he is still asleep. Maybe he is getting the idea that he can sleep later if he wants :)

Here are a few pictures I snapped from the video camera we have over his crib.  As you can see, yesterday, he was up and adam pulling himself up the side of the crib trying to see “what’s out there.” The camera is a night vision camera so to him it was dark when these pictures were taken.

Speaking of climbing, he works really hard on his crawling and standing ever day.  He is very determined and I think that the frustration that comes with being determined has driven him to this point.  We will lower the crib mattress again this weekend so as to avoid having a broken armed baby  :)
